Early Years Literacy Support 

At Seine River School Division, we believe all students can become successful readers with high-quality instruction and timely support. Our Early Years Literacy Support model provides students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 with the literacy instruction and intervention they need to develop strong reading and writing skills. The model is based on a comprehensive approach to literacy that connects classroom instruction, assessment, intervention, professional learning, leadership, and family partnerships. 

Literacy development is a shared responsibility among families, classroom teachers, school teams, and divisional staff. Our goal is to ensure every student experiences success, builds confidence as a learner, and develops a lifelong love of reading and learning.

How Literacy Support Works 

Seine River School Division uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to provide literacy instruction and intervention. MTSS is a proactive framework that helps schools identify student needs early and provide increasingly targeted support when needed. 

Tier 1: High-Quality Instruction

All students receive evidence-informed literacy instruction in their classroom. Teachers use ongoing assessment to guide instruction, monitor student growth, and respond to student needs.

Tier 2: Targeted Support

Some students may benefit from additional support targeted to support student-specific literacy needs. These short-term interventions focus on specific reading and writing skills while students continue to fully participate in classroom instruction

Tier 3: Intensive Support

A small number of students may require more intensive intervention. Early Literacy Intervention Teachers work closely with students, classroom teachers, families, and the school support team to provide individualized instruction based on identified literacy needs.

• Ongoing progress monitoring
• Student strengths and learning needs

School-based literacy teams review student needs regularly to ensure supports are responsive, targeted, and effective.

Who Supports My Child's Literacy Development?

At Seine River School Division, literacy support is a team effort. Classroom teachers, Learning Support Teachers, Early Literacy Intervention Teachers, School Literacy Teams, Administrators, and Families work together to ensure that every student receives the instruction, intervention, encouragement, and opportunities they need to become confident and successful readers and writers. 

Each school has a literacy team that works together to support students’ literacy learning. Depending on the school, this team may include the Principal, Vice-Principal, Classroom Teachers, Learning Support Teachers, Early Literacy Intervention Teachers, Instructional Coaches, and Clinicians.

The team:

• Reviews school-wide literacy data.
• Identifies areas of strength and need.
• Plans and monitors literacy supports and interventions.
• Makes decisions about resources, professional learning, and school literacy goals.
• Works to ensure every student receives the support they need to be successful.

The classroom teacher is your child's primary literacy instructor and plays the most important role in supporting reading and writing development. Classroom teachers:

• Provide daily literacy instruction for all students.
• Use assessment information to plan responsive instruction.
• Monitor student growth and progress.
• Communicate with families about learning and progress.
• Collaborate with school team members when additional supports may be needed.

The Learning Support Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers and families to support student success. The LST:

• Helps identify students who may benefit from additional support. 
• Participates in reviewing literacy and assessment data. 
• Collaborates with classroom teachers to plan appropriate interventions.
• Coordinates support for students with more intensive learning needs. 
• Works with families and school teams to support student success.

The Early Literacy Intervention Teacher is a specialized educator who provides targeted literacy support for students requiring additional intervention. They:

• Deliver small-group and individual literacy intervention.
• Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on student needs.
• Work closely with classroom teachers and Learning Support Teachers. 
• Share literacy expertise and resources with school staff. 
• Contribute to school literacy planning and problem-solving.
• Communicate with families regarding intervention goals and progress.

Families are important partners in literacy learning. We encourage families to:

• Read with their child regularly.
• Celebrate learning and growth.
• Communicate with teachers about questions or concerns.
• Participate in learning activities provided by the school.
• Help foster a positive attitude toward reading and learning.
